Lunar New Year: The Year of the Flying Monkey

Hello students!

Also known as Chinese New Year, February 8th marks the day of a new beginning according to the lunar calendar. Activities and special traditions lasts a week for this occasion. Some traditions include: giving red envelopes, lighting fireworks, gathering with friends and family, and ending with a Lantern festival.

In my family, we have a grand feast with everyone coming together. Giving fruits to one another is considered kind and sweet.

The monkey is one of the 12 zodiacs which characterizes each Chinese New Year. It is characterized as playful, clever, and spontaneous. I encourage you all to be more upbeat and positive this year, and especially for the new semester.

In Seattle's Chinatown-International District, there is a festival celebrating the New Year! It is on Saturday February 13 from 11am-4pm. There will be food vendors in the heart of the Chinatown-International District along with traditional and cultural performances. This is weekend right before mid-winter break, and it is a great time to get out and head to the city with some friends.

I hope everyone has a prosper and healthy new year!

Best,

Karissa
